7/3/2008 A-MAZE-ING Camp Success Anderson, SC - During the week of June 23rd 2008, we had 27 children from Anderson County participate in the first (hopefully of many) life-changing science and engineering camp. Our project was to design several mazes that would be created on one specific ˝ acre location over the course of a year. A-MAZE-ING Camp Success gave campers unprecedented access to professors, teachers and industry professionals. Together they learned engineering skills through fun team-building activities, Discovery Workshops, learning lab activities, and field trips to local companies/project sites. The campers’ main goal was to work in project teams to provide a solution to a community customer. The children of the camp created maze designs using software and models. The campers finalized their designs, constructed models and presented them to their client – Christ Temple Church, on whose grounds the first maze will be constructed. A-MAZE-ING Camp Success has been all about fun, collaboration, and teamwork. It began with the dream of Reverend W.T. Lewis of Christ Temple Church, to improve his community and his church. He asked Paulette H. Pfeiffer, Executive Director of Silent Victims of Crime, for assistance. Ms. Pfeiffer enlisted the help of Kathie Bobbitt, President of Kinesis Development, and Elder Erick Bradshaw, President of Fresh Start Community Development. Ms. Bobbitt appealed to Tony Smith, President of Silver Crescent Foundation to assist them with a Summer Camp – Camp Success - that would help design a community maze for the church. Winston Holton, Field Coordinator of Clemson University’s Call Me MISTER and Mark Joseph, a Call Me Mister Scholar and Project Director, thought this sounded like a great project for their college students Demetrius Green, Mansa Joseph, Brandon Middleton and Tony Webb. Finally, Dr. Danny Hawkins was very gracious and made a space available for the campers at Anderson University, which added some additional excitement. This started as an idea for a one-week summer camp for area children and has turned into community beautification effort. Other churches in Anderson and Greenville have heard of the mazes and want to construct the children’s designs on their property. Ministers and Pastors see the value in having a maze as a place for the public to gather with children and also as a means to raise money for the church with community holiday events. The children themselves are excited with the prospect of seeing their designs brought to life and working on making that happen. Ever since the end of camp, the children have been calling to ask when we can all meet again to further the maze project. We will schedule a planning session with the children before school starts. The Call Me Misters are planning to make this an annual project throughout the state. To initiate this 2nd phase of our project, we need to reach the hearts of our community to gather volunteers, supplies and donations to construct the physical ˝ acre maze designed by the children over the next year at Christ Temple Church at 1912 McDuffie Street, Anderson SC. Community residents will be invited to a groundbreaking ceremony with Mayor Carol Burdette of Pendleton and can view the progress of the maze culminating with a Grand Opening ceremony sometime next year. |
